Obviously the pandemic changes the way we view living in a continuing care retirement community. Though the cases of Covid are the lowest for independent living residents, as compared to residents living in higher levels of care, people are nervous about living in at an independent living community. So let’s discuss what life is like at CCRCs these days.
It goes without saying that this blog post, talks in generalities only. While some communities are returning to more normalcy, not all are. It depends on the community’s decision makers and the level of cases at the community and the general population.
Dining
For indoor dining, reservations are the new norm. Obviously, dining managers want to limit the number of people eating indoors at any given time. Outdoor dining has been a saving grace for communities because protocols allows for more seating as long as the weather cooperates. Hopefully people will bundle up to eat dinner outside.
Activities
Residents are able to take advantage of most of the activities that communities offer. The issues are occupancy at any given event and the amount of time the event takes. Given that part of the value of CCRC living is derived from one’s sense of community, these activities are really important to the residents.
Visitation
One of the biggest problems during the pandemic has been restricting outsiders from coming into communities. Nothing is more disheartening than not being able to visit with loved ones during these times. However, in independent living, communities are allowing some visitation within the community building and most are letting families visit outside. Families are taking advantage of the many different venues at their CCRC’s
Hopefully this blog post is a one off and there will be no need to update it in the future. Soon, life will return to a new normal where independent living families can once again thrive in retirement.
