When we discuss comparisons of different independent living communities with families and individuals making different types of retirement plans, our conversations often cover a variety of options and choices that they didn’t even realize they had. This can be empowering for senior citizens who are retirement planning, but it can also prove overwhelming.
Here’s a brief overview of some senior living options that come up when comparing independent senior living communities:
YOUR RETIREMENT LIVING OPTIONS
When walking families through their options for retirement, I like to make sure we’re on the same page about the independent living options that could range from apartment complexes to independent living communities and assisted living facilities. One type of independent living community may be referred to as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), also known as a Life Plan Community. Other independent living communities are referred to as as 55+ communities and tend to have condos or single family homes.
WHAT SENIOR HOMES AND 55+ COMMUNITIES SHARE
Whether you choose a CCRC or 55+ community, the essential thing they both share is a simplified approach to living. This means that a family is choosing, whether due to medical reasons or a lifestyle choice, to let other people take care of their yards, meals, or some other aspects of daily life.
If you prefer that your lawn is cared for in a very particular way, that’s something you may need to let go in a 55+ community! The benefit of letting go of some day to day concerns is that senior citizens have more time and independence to pursue other activities.
THE BENEFITS OF CONTINUING CARE COMMUNITIES
A CCRC will typically have a smaller personal living space for residents compared to their homes, but they also tend to offer the most by way of services, community, and care. Most CCRC’s have common areas, daily activities, and staff on hand to help with day to day needs.
While you’ll give up a larger personal space, CCRC’s typically provide many communal areas, gardens, and other common rooms that make it easy to interact with fellow residents. If you have medical concerns, a CCRC can provide the hands-on, daily support that will give you greater peace of mind. And speaking of which, a CCRC tends to have excellent security.
THE BENEFITS OF 55+ COMMUNITIES
The financial benefits of a 55+ community typically come up in my discussions with families about their retirement options. These communities don’t have the same up front costs as a CCRC and they don’t have the same fees since residents are providing their own meals and don’t require the same level of hands-on care.
A 55+ independent living community provides the privacy and space that many senior citizens desire, while also connecting them with an established community. There’s usually a homeowners association that manages maintenance of the properties, which can give peace of mind to residents. Activities and recreation areas are also usually available to all residents.
